Chapter 9 · Settings

The Preferences Screen

Every setting of the app in one place: your Windguru account, theme and language, what the forecast views show, which weather models are fetched, and the units used everywhere.

1 Overview

Open the Preferences screen with the gear icon (⚙) at the top right of the Favorites screen. On tablets and foldables it opens in the right-hand pane, next to your spot list.

The settings are arranged in four groups, each described below: Account, Appearance, Forecast display and Units. Every change applies immediately: there is no Save button. Rows ending with a chevron (›) open a list at the bottom of the screen; tap an option to select it and the list closes by itself.

2 Account

The first group connects the app to your windguru.cz account. An account is optional: the app works fully without one. The difference between a Free and a PRO account is explained in Chapter 2.

Row What it shows or does
Signed in as Your Windguru username once you are signed in. While signed out it reads Not signed in; tap it to open the sign-in sheet.
Plan Free, or PRO next to the gold Windguru logo when your account has a PRO subscription.
Sign out Shown in red once you are signed in. Signs you out immediately, with no confirmation.

Signing in

The sign-in sheet opens with the headline "One account. Sync on all devices." and a short reminder of what an account brings. Tap Sign in once to reveal the Login and Password fields, fill them in, then tap Sign in again (or press Done on the keyboard). If the login or password is wrong, the sheet shows Account unknown. Don't have an account yet? Register new Windguru account opens the windguru.cz sign-up page in your browser.

After a successful sign-in the app goes straight back to Favorites and:

  • replaces the local Favorites list with your account's favorite spots, and fills the Custom Spots tab with your custom spots;
  • fetches the forecasts of all those spots right away;
  • uses the units and viewing hours saved in your Windguru account, unless you chose your own in this screen (see Units);
  • checks your account's spot lists once a day, so spots you add or remove on the website or another device show up here too.
Before you sign in or out: signing in replaces the favorites you added while signed out with your account's list. Signing out removes your favorites, your custom spots and every saved forecast from the phone. Your spots stay safe in your Windguru account and come back the next time you sign in.

3 Appearance

The second group sets how the app looks and which language it speaks.

Theme

System (default) follows your phone's light or dark setting. Light and Dark keep the app in that mode whatever the phone uses.

Color theme

The app's accent color and the tint of its backgrounds. Ten hues, each shown with its color swatch: Windguru Blue (default, the colors of windguru.cz), Deep Ocean, Trade Wind Teal, Seafoam, Regatta Navy, Storm Slate, Mistral Violet, Sunrise Amber, Squall Coral, and Dune Sand. The forecast colors for wind, temperature and waves do not change.

Language

System default uses your phone's language, or English if the app is not translated into it. You can also pick one of 34 languages, each listed by its own name next to its flag (for example Français or Deutsch). The app reloads in the new language as soon as you pick it.

Home screen widgets: each widget has its own color theme setting, with an extra App default option that follows the color theme chosen here.

4 Forecast Display

The third group controls what the forecast views show. Its six switches work across the whole app:

Switch Default What it does when turned on
Show only most precise model Off Shows only the finest-resolution model available for each spot, among the models you fetch. The Blended forecast and the other models disappear from the model selector. Favorites, widgets and Android Auto use that model too.
Show past hours Off Keeps today's earlier hours in the forecast views and widgets. When off, the forecast starts at the current hour.
Hide current hour forecast Off Hides the Now panel at the top of the Timeline, Meteogram and Classic views (see Chapter 3).
Hide gust speed Off Removes gusts everywhere: every forecast view (including the Classic GST row), the Favorites rows, the consensus breakdowns and Android Auto.
Disable animations Off Turns off motion effects such as the compass needle sweep and the animated map movements. Useful on slower phones, or if you prefer a still screen.
Show day jump strip On Shows the row of day buttons (Today Sep 8, Tomorrow Sep 9…) above the Timeline, Meteogram and Classic views, to jump straight to a day. Turn it off to gain space. It is always hidden when a phone is turned sideways.

METEOGRAM Display precipitation and cloud cover as

Icons (default) draws one weather icon per hour (sun, cloud or rain), chosen from that hour's cloud cover and rainfall. Bars draws two bar charts instead: cloud cover below the curve and rain above it, each with its Up to… peak label. See Chapter 5.

MODELS Weather models shown

Shows how many models are fetched, out of all those the app knows (63 of 63 by default). Tap it to open the Weather models screen described below.

HOURS Viewing hours

The hours of the day the forecast views and widgets show, for example 06h – 20h. The sheet offers Windguru account setting at the top, then a From row and a To row of hour buttons (00h to 23h); tap Apply to save. With the account setting, the app uses the hours saved in your Windguru account, or 06h – 20h while signed out.

The Weather models screen

This screen lists every model the app can fetch, split into Wind models and Wave models, each sorted from the finest resolution to the coarsest. A spot only gets the models that cover it.

  • Untick a model to stop fetching it: its data is removed from every spot straight away.
  • Tick it again and the app downloads it for every spot it covers.
  • Select none / Select all at the top right unticks or ticks the whole list at once.
Models and the Blended forecast: every ticked model feeds the Blended forecast and its consensus dots. There is no separate list for the blend: unticking a model also takes it out of the Blended forecast. Fewer models means lighter downloads, but less material for the consensus. See Chapter 1 for what each model offers.

5 Units

The last group sets the units used everywhere in the app: forecast views, Favorites, widgets and Android Auto. Each list starts with Windguru account setting, followed by the units you can pick yourself.

Row Units you can pick Default when signed out
Wind speed Knots, Meters per second, Kilometers per hour, Miles per hour, Beaufort scale Miles per hour in the US and the UK, knots everywhere else
Temperature Celsius, Fahrenheit Fahrenheit in the US, Celsius everywhere else
Distance Meters, Feet (used for wave heights) Feet in the US and the UK, meters everywhere else
Account setting or your own choice: with Windguru account setting selected, the app follows the units saved in your Windguru account, so the website and the app always match. While signed out, it uses the default for your phone's region shown above. Pick a unit yourself to keep it on this phone whatever the account says; select Windguru account setting again to go back. The same rule applies to the viewing hours.
